In 1943, Gary Public Library was designated a selective depository to receive Government publications.  It has a legal responsibility to provide access to Federal documents not only to local citizens, but also the entire population of the 1st Congressional District of Indiana.  The Federal Depository Library Program was established by the Congress in order to promote the American public's awareness of the activities of our Federal Government.
